Răzvan Suma is one of the most important cello soloists in Romania. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Music University in Bucharest, Romania, and also studied at the Longy School of Music in Cambrige, Massachusets, in the Artist Diploma Program. He attended masterclasses with great cellists like Arto Noras, Frans Helmerson, Herre Jan Stegenga, Miklós Perényi, Marin Cazacu, and Radu Aldulescu.

Răzvan was born in 1977 in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and has been an award-winning cellist ever since picking the instrument up at the age of 6, receiving the first prize in a competition at the age of 7, in 1984. He won important international competitions as Markneukirchen Competition in Germany, G. B. Viotti Competition in Italy, Chişinau Competition in Republic of Moldavia, and Villa de Llanes in Spain.

He has performed with many orchestras throughout the Europe, such as Bern Symphony Orchestra or Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, ERT National Symphony Grecce, playing next to such musicians as Maxim Vengerov, Alexander Sitkovetski, Richard Galliano, Borromeo Quartet, Justus Frantz, Josef Lendvay, Misha Katz, Jin Wang, Cristian Mandeal and Marin Cazacu.

From 2010, Răzvan has been holding the position of the cello soloist in residence of the Romanian Radio Orchestras, and is the cello professor at the Bucharest Music University. He has performed concerts and recitals in such countries as France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Hungary, Argentina, USA, Macao, Vietnam, China, Morocco and the Republic of Moldovia. He was invited at the MDR Music Festival in Dresden, Germany, the Murten Classics Festival in Switzerland, the SONORO Festival in Romania, and the Klaipeda Cello Festival – Lithuania. Razvan was also invited to play in great concert halls, such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the Bamberg Symphoniker.

Since 2011, every year Răzvan is touring in Romania with the “Vă place…?” (“Do you like..?”) project. The first edition of the tour – “Do you like Bach?” – was centered around J. S. Bach, and he gave 19 concerts in total, playing all of the six suites for cello solo at each of them. The second tour was the J. Brahms tribute with the two cello and piano sonatas on the programme, and the 13 concerts around the country. Then other projects followed: “Do you like TANGO?” with Argentinians singer Analia Selis and guitarist Julio Santillan, “Do you like SCHU-bert-mann?” with pianist Horia Mihail, “Do you like BEETHOVEN?” with pianist Daniel Goiti. Răzvan rebranded all his personal tours under one generic name PlaCello, also creating PlaCello Ensemble with the most talented cellists from Romania.
